This is a large owl, Strix varia, that is also known as
a hoot owl. The adult is 20 inches long with a 44-inch
wingspan. They nest in tree cavities and their diet
consists mostly of mice but it also feeds on rabbits,
chipmunks, foxes and birds such as grouse. It is also an
accomplished fisherman.
